History of St Etienne, Moudon
There has been a foundation on the site of St Etienne since at least the 3rd century, and possibly earlier, it is recorded that in the fifth century, when the locals were defending themselves against invasion (unsuccessfully) against the Bergundians, that the church was still in use. St Etienne’s church was probably rebuilt many times over the succeeding centuries, until the current church was built in 1281.
The tower has a peculiar history, it was started in 1420, and was completed in 1420, however, as early as 1425 it was decided to enhance it from a tower to a bell tower, this took the next couple of decades to complete.
In the 14th century, thirteen side altars and chapels were built, with another five being added between 1458 and 1523. This period was one of great expansion for Moudon, which is reflected in many enhancements for the church, not least of which are the misericords which date from 1499 to 1501. These exceptional misericords are a complete mixture of subjects, and as you would expect from continental misericords, they do not have supporters.
Between 1506 and 1508 the crypt was plastered and painted.
In 1536 the Bernese conquered Moudon and forced St Etienne into the Reformed Church. This caused the 18 altars and chapels to be demolished, however unlike the English protestant reformation, far from whitewashing out the paintings and making the churches as plain as possible, the St Etienne’s was further embellished in 1563, by the addition of a six legged, stone communion table and other richly decorated furniture.
In 1695 the pulpit, which had been built of wood was replaced by the sandstone choir that we have today.
